TEACHING TIPS

About the Unit

Aktivität 147 Mein Tag an der Uni

This unit goes deeper into the principles of lean manufacturing by dividing activities that add value, are necessary but do not add value, or are simply a waste of time. It is sometimes difficult to understand these concepts. Many people would say: If I don’t drive to work, I won’t accomplish anything. This is the point where you have to explain that the drive doesn’t add value to the “product” (let’s say data entry), but is necessary. These are the areas where lean manufacturing experts would suggest changes: Your drive to work is 45 minutes, how can we make it shorter. Students will get a sense that this goes beyond making products, but affects city planning, transportation planning and more.

(4) Goes back to Aktivität 145 that saving time in one place makes room for “rewards” in others.

Aktivität 148 Heikos Hausaufgaben

(4) If everything goes as expected, students will realize that most activities do not directly contribute to the project, but are necessary. Have students brainstorm about inventions and changes that aim exactly at reducing the time for necessary steps that don’t directly add to the “product.” Example: 1980: In order to get an article, you went to the library, searched through the card catalog, went to the shelf, copied the article, and took it home. 2019: How does it work now? How much time do you save?
