TEACHING TIPS

About the Unit

If you don't know much about chemistry, don't worry. You will be able to teach this lesson with no knowledge about chemistry. Stick with the exercises or ask students to explain details if necessary. You can also all explore questions together if some come up that you cannot answer. You are the expert for the German language not for chemistry!

Aktivität 109: Chemie - Grundbegriffe

This activity introduces some basic chemistry vocabulary and practices the words in simple "translation" exercises of formula to word.

Keep it simple and stick with the scaffolded answers, this is not about understanding chemistry but about introducing vocabulary.

Aktivität 110: Chemie - Aussprache

This phonetic activity will prove useful for other areas as well. Non-native speakers tend to pronounce words that look similar to their native language the way they are used to. This is natural and very common. This activity focuses the students' ear to the differences in pronunciation. You can go beyond these words and ask students for other words they have already encountered. Stick with cognates here because these are the ones that are mispronounced according to native language. You may just want to go back to the page before and look at cognates in the bread text and think about the different pronunciation here as well.

Aktivität 111: Chemie im Körper - Zucker

This is scaffolded again in a way that no knowledge of chemistry is necessary. It will provide students who do study the sciences with useful vocabulary, however, and will also allow other students to be comfortable with the integrated approach we follow in this book. It will show them that no matter the discipline, they can tackle all exercises.

Ask students what some of the important words mean (Kohlenhydrat, Zucker, Eiweiß etc.)

Aktivität 112: Versuchsprotokoll: Experiment mit Natron und Essig

You can find plenty of videos online for this experiment. It is quite simple to do yourself as well though (and impressive for the students).

The easiest way to do this is to just pour vinegar into a cup with baking soda.

You will get a better effect if you dissolve the baking soda in warm water with a bit of dish soap, then pour in the vinegar.

There are lots of fun explanations online as well to create a volcano that way.
