About the Unit
Aktivität 104: Zutaten
This is a quick activity to help students recall vocabulary as well as prepare for reading and writing recipes. You can also make this a free-writing exercise. Use a relay activity instead for example: Have students line up in front of the board (depending on the class size, groups of 6 students should work well). The student at the front has the marker or chalk and writes one ingredient that is typically found in baking recipes on the board, then they hand it to the next person who has to write a different word. You can play for a set amount of time or until everyone has written twice (time usually works best). Give points either for every correct word (you can decide to only score correctly spelled words and/or the correct article) or for every correct word that no other group listed.
You could also play the song "Backe Backe Kuchen" to add some culturally authentic content plus listening comprehension.
Aktivität 105: Muffins
1) Some students may know what is in typical muffin recipes but many students may have to do a quick internet research for this question. Don't allow too much time here, students will need it to compare but shouldn't spend more than 2 or 3 minutes on this part.

Aktivität 106: Zwei Kartoffelsalate
Goal of this activity is twofold: to show regional variety in popular food items and to practice imperative forms.
You will find the handouts for three different potato salad recipes at www.klett-usa.com/impuls1cards. Print them out so that every students gets one of the three recipes. Note that the Berliner Kartoffelsalat involves a few more steps than the other ones, so give this to stronger students.
1) and 2) are done individually. Students mark the imperative forms and reformulate the recipe in the du-Form.
3) This is partner work or can be done in groups of three. This is a dictation exercise and practices reading, listening and writing at the same time.
Alternatively, you can use a Laufdiktat for this exercise. You would then switch the order and begin with the dictation. Tape all three recipes on the wall or board around the room and form pairs. One partner walks to one of the recipes, memorizes as much as they can, walks back to their partner and tells them what to write. The partners can switch roles, half way through the recipe. The second part of the exercise would then be to mark up and reformulate the imperative forms, which could be done individually or in the original pairs.
You can also hand out the recipes beforehand and ask students to make potato salad to bring to class. After this activity, you can then do a tasting and ask students to rank the three salads. There are many more varieties that students can also find online.
If you have time left, you can also ask students to think of traditional recipes from their own country (countries) and in what ways they differ regionally (e.g. stuffing, corn bread, chowder, bbq).
