About the Unit
Aktivität 101: Imbisswagen oder schickes Restaurant
Before listening, ask the students to brainstorm characteristics of fast food restaurants, street vendors and more upscale restaurants. What do they expect people to say and order, what could be indicators in what people say or do for what kind of place they are at.
Listen to the audio at least twice. Just run it through once and don't yet ask what the students heard or thought. During the second one pause after each place and ask students to repeat the things they heard that made them guess the place, do this for each and only at the end reveal which place is which. During the third listening (or if you have less time, during the second one), students write down what the people eat at each place.
Aktivität 102: Dein Restaurant/Imbiss in Berlin
1) You can skip this activity if you want to give the students more time for the creative part in the subsequent activities. Otherwise, this exercise is a good way of thinking about traditional German food items. Especially in case the students want to design a German restaurant this will be helpful.
Additional note for biology majors or others who are interested: Krabben belong to the family of Kurzschwanzkrebse, but the Nordseekrabben are Langschwanzkrebse, meaning Garnelen, still the word Nordseekrabben is more common than Garnelen.
2) This activity will begin the creative process of designing their own restaurant. You can modify this exercise by asking them to invent other food items such as regional burgers (this is easier because they have already engaged with the different McDonald's menus beforehand). But pizza is a great way of reviewing foot items because almost anything could be on a pizza and to be creative with the vocabulary students already have at their disposal. Don't spend too much time on this activity, however, because the third step is crucial for the roleplay.
3) Allow students to follow different paths here. They can use the pizzas designed in 2) or focus on German food items as presented in 1) Others may want to create something completely different. This helps with internal differentiation if you have stronger and weaker students but if your whole class is either strong or weak you can limit their choices.
4) Make the presentations brief. You can have students think of them like radio or tv ads. A good slogan and some main characteristics of the place, the menu or some outstanding food items will suffice here.
Aktivität 103: Im Restaurant: Rollenspiel
Let students play simultaneously so that as many students are engaged the whole time. You can ask volunteer groups to re-play their scene for the whole class or discuss some common mistakes afterwards, but let students focus on the conversational aspect of this activity. Make sure to read through the phrases before they begin their role plays and clarify any questions they may have.
