About the Unit

Aktivität 97: Musik-Ecke "Supergeil"

1) Begin with question 1 and talk about the word "supergeil". You can address the sexual origin of the word or leave it for after you show the video.

2) Find the video for Supergeil – Edeka Version online. Whow the video in mute. That way, students will focus on the images only and can identify words from their own memory. Everyone can collect what they saw and prepare for listening to the words in a second viewing.

3) During the second viewing you can now have students fill the gaps.


Before answering question 4, you may want to talk about the sexual connotations in the video and relate it to the word's etymology if you didn't address it when answering question 1. You can also keep this part of the word out of the discussion and stick with the current meaning of "awesome".

Aktivität 98: Lebensmittel-Labels

Goal of this activity is to show both the difference in how the US and Germany list the nutritional values on labels and to question our own perceptions of what is healthy (influenced by advertisements, a point that can be but doesn't have to be addressed. You could ask: why do we think "this is healthier than this", which would allow students to consider the influence of the media on our perception in easy enough language).

It may come as a surprise to students that the calorie count of a granola bar, trail mix and a chocolate bar are relatively close to each other. You could already mention that there are good and bad fats and that nuts are high in good fat whereas chocolate doesn't have much good fat. Also interesting is that sugar is the same for the body no matter whether it comes from fruit or from refined sugar - the calories are the same and the jolt you get are the same, however, fruit also comes with vitamins which makes it still the better choice in terms of healthy eating. Both of these things will come up in future exercises though and don't need to be addressed yet.

For the orange juice, you can also point back to the McDonald's activity to recall the information about adjustment to local taste.

Aktivität 99: Vitamine und Mineralstoffe

1) This could be a difficult activity if students tried to formulate complex sentences. Show them the example and use the example as a model in which students can plug in the information provided for each line.

2) Here, students will be slowly guided to formulate more and more of the sentence on their own. This will help for 3).
