Wochenmarkt

Einheit 28

TEACHING TIPS

About the Unit

Aktivität 86: Welche Lebensmittel gibt es auf diesem Wochenmarkt?

1) Before the first listening, you may want to ask students first which words they remember or play a quizlet live to recall the words. This will help them identify the right words quicker.

Play the audio once or twice depending on your group.

3) Depending on the majors represented in your class, you may want to distinguish here between the botanical categories and categories in a grocery store. For instance, melons are vegetables, but are often sold as fruit in stores. Mushrooms are sold as vegetables but aren't botanically vegetables.

A linguistic difference between English and German complicates this exercise as well. English fruit can mean both German Frucht and Obst, but these are not the same in German. Tomatoes for instance are Früchte or Fruchtgemüse but they are not Obst. Nüsse are also Früchte but not Obst. If you have students who are biology majors or interested in this, ask them to research the difference and give a brief presentation to the whole class.

Aktivität 87: Obst und Gemüse beschreiben

Many of the adjectives fit for each of the fruit and veggies. Determine for yourself how many you want the students to list. You can limit it for instance to the two most prominent once for each item but since they need the lists for the next exercises, you can also just limit the reading of the adjectives back to the class so that it doesn't become redundant. You can also let students just call in the adjectives they think are appropriate and go through this exercise quickly. This is an important exercise for the next Aktivität though, so you don't want to skip it.
