TEACHING TIPS
About the Unit
This is the first unit that students prepared at home (LERNEN). We encourage you not to explain any of the grammar covered in the LERNEN assignments in class, and always assume that every student did the homework. Students who missed doing their homework will notice very early that it will be more difficult to follow along, and will know that they will have to do the homework moving forward. If you start explaining the grammar now, students will think that it is not “essential” to take some time to do and understand all the LERNEN assignments, since they now think you will explain it in class anyways.
Aktivität 1. Begrüßen und Verabschieden in deutschsprachigen Ländern
You can model the short conversation. Read it aloud, practice pronunciation with the students. Use a map to point to different D-A-CH countries and regions where the various goodbyes are typically used/heard.
You can have students act this out in pairs either informally or in front of the class as a review.
Aktivität 2: Fragen Sie: Wie heißen Sie (Name, formell)
Demonstrate the difference between du and Sie. Point to last names. You can demonstrate using students’ last names or well-known people. Read the example aloud. Point out the difference in endings of heißen by repeating it over and over again (don’t explain grammar, use it to make them realize the differences). Use gestures to help students understand the pronouns. Have students act out the dialog with at least 6 classmates, writing down their names.
Aktivität 3: Beliebte Namen
Introduce the activity. Ask students to work independently or in pairs to answer the questions. You can have students share their answers in small groups or as a whole class.
Aktivität 4: Klassensprache
Transition to activity 4. You can direct students to work independently or in pairs to match the photos to the classroom phrases. Then, practice by having students act out the phrases. For an added challenge, you can have students take turns directing the class.
