TEACHING TIPS
About the Unit
On day 1, as students enter the classroom, stand near the door and greet them in German. You can shake their hands and can say “Ich heiße xyz”.
We only wrote two activities for this unit so that you have enough time to talk about the syllabus. We recommend finishing these activities first (speaking German only) to set the right tone (the class is in Germany only), and then possibly switch to English for the syllabus at the end of the lesson.
A: Fragen Sie: Wie heißt du? (Name)
You can start by modeling saying hello and introducing yourself. You can project the book with the language needed, so students have a visual model for what they will be saying. Also point out the ß and exaggerate the S sound to help them understand the pronunciation of this new letter.
Possible warm-up: Groups of students stand in circles and throw a ball, asking “Wie heißt du?”. The person who receives the ball has to answer and throw the ball to the next person. Multiple balls can be added to each circles. After each student participated at least ones, vary the time of the day (Guten Morgen – Guten Tag – Guten Abend)
Use gestures with classroom commands, so students are able to understand what you want them to do. Ask them to open their books “Öffnen Sie das Buch auf Seite 2”. Watch the students, and as they begin to open their books, point to them and reinforce. You can say “Ja, genau. Seite 2”, etc. Read through the example with the students, then ask 2 students to model the activity. Students then circulate around the room, greeting one another and introducing themselves. Students can vary the greetings for the different times of day.
B: Was ist das?
Work with the example. Ask students “Ist das ein Baby?”, “Ist das eine Banane?“, usw. Finally, land on “Ist das ein Auto? Ja”. Ask “Was ist das?” Students answer: “Ein Auto” or “Das ist ein Auto”. Have students match the pictures. Model pronunciation, then have students work either in groups or pairs to ask and answer “Was ist das?” for each picture. You can point out the similarities between English and German and encourage students to use their prior knowledge to help them comprehend.
